Butta On...Ebony Magazine Can't Be Serious
So the cover for April's issue of Ebony magazine with Janet Jackson has surfaced on the net, and on first glance it's pretty unremarkable. There's some nonsense about the shady Clintons and if Black America owes them a debt or somesuch. Beneath that headline is another about the pole dancing fitness craze. In true Ebony fashion, they're only about 3 years late on that one. But it was the next headline that really caught my eye. Check this out, y'all:

Think You Have Indian Blood? Guess Again

They. Can't. Be. Serious. Is this actually important enough to have a feature story written about it in a major Black publication? I guess so to all of those with "Indian in they family." Sounds like some people's faces may be cracked when they find out that their great-great-great grandmother wasn't Cherokee but instead drove a Jeep Cherokee. I can see how someone could've gotten that twisted as the story passed through generations. Hey, it could happen. What won't happen is me reading this madness this lifetime or the next. This is just reason #28928 why I no longer read this mag.

But for those who still do, be sure to check out the May issue of Ebony for 101 Ways to Style Good Hair. I keed! I keed!

Ebony hasn't been a serious magazine in years. And I'm so tired of their top 10 couples who, by the time the publication hits the press, are either no longer together and/or divorced.

LMBAO Butta! Gurl you crack me up. Drive a Jeep Cheroke...lol. African-American Lives 2 aired on PBS a couple of weeks ago and a whole segment was dedicated to this very 'Injan in your family' subject. It was a trip.

Ebony needs to come off that wondering if Black America owe Billary. We voted for 'em, what they f they want from a n*gga? LOL.

I agree, Ebony Mag has been slippin'...I always pass over it.

Not surprised. I haven't read Ebony mag in years. Bob Johnson's daughter was one of those featured on African American Lives 2. Probably why it became a major story.

Hey Butta, that was really funny about the Jeep Cherokee. You just can't imagine the number people, both black and white, who claim to have a great granny Cherokee princess. They absolutely make our lives miserable in the Cherokee Nation. But I digress. Since you didn't read the article "What Does Indian Blood Look like?", you probably don't know that I was interviewed by the Ebony reporter who wrote the article about the Freedmen. While some of the article focuses on them having Cherokee blood ancestry, which a majority of them do, the real issue facing the Freedmen of the Cherokee Nation and three of the other Five Civilized (slave-holding) Tribes is the denial of their political rights in a government that happens to be among the nearly 600 indigenous governments of the United States, what people commonly call tribes. The Cherokee Nation has a unique historical evolution from an homogenous Cherokee Indian tribe when Europeans and their African slaves first arrived in North America to a multi-ethnic nation comprised of Cherokee, Delawares, Shawnee and Creek Indians, as well as adopted whites and blacks. The Cherokee Nation has a government to government relationship with the United States called "federal recognition." To keep this short and invite your bloggers to know more about this unique group of black Americans known as Freedmen, I will say that the rights of the Freedmen are not contingent upon whether they have Cherokee Indian blood or not, any more than it was necessary in Alabama or Georgia for those freed slaves and their descendants to have white blood. The enjoyment of citizenship rights in the Nation of your birth and where your ancestors rest does not depend upon race. The Cherokees held slaves before our Nation became an incorporated part of the U.S. in 1907. We freed those slaves of our own free will in 1863. We negotiated a treaty with the U.S. that not only brought the rebellious Cherokee Nation back into the American family of governments, but also incorporated among us, as full and equal citizens of our tribal nation the blacks we had held in bondage and other smaller Indian tribes. Their right to citizenship is a matter of law, not blood. My tribe, in an embarassingly awkward and immoral effort to expell the Freedmen, has exposed a racist bone in our body politic that may be the undoing of our modern government. I would first invite your bloggers to read the article and then proceed to dubyadubyadubya.cornsilks.com and read historic documents and reports on the rights of the Freedmen. I would invite your bloggers to ask me questions concerning the rights of the Freedmen and the Cherokee Nation. And finally I would invite your bloggers to take action to fight racism where ever it raises its ugly head, even among Indians, by contacting your congressional delegation in Washington to support the bill introduced by Rep. Diane Watson to strip Cherokee Nation of its funding until we restore the citizenship rights of the Freedmen. Thank you.

I so feel you... somewhere down the line Ebony lost touch with the African American community and thus this is what's left.
