Butta On...Teedra Moses: The Afterglow
Butta & Teedra Moses, April 2007

As you all know, I went to see Teedra Moses in concert this past Friday night. The show was fantastic. Teedra's voice was flawless, and this was despite her not having her trusty computer with her due to some technical difficulties (i.e. it broke). To hear her tell it, she wasn't in her zone, but you coulda fooled me. If this was Teedra at her worst, then she sounded better than a lot of singers at their best.

The energy at The Black Cat was incredible. Teedra brought her Complex Simplicity to Washington, DC, and we showed her lots of love. You could tell that she was feeling it. The audience was singing all of the words to her songs and grooving right along with Ms. Moses and the band Black Moses.

Despite standing behind the Great Wall of Tall Dudes, I managed to get some decent guerilla concert footage by extending my arms waaaaay above my head and zooming in on the stage. Yes, my arms were tired by the end of the night, but I do it all for y'all. Don't say I never gave you guys anything.

Teedra opened up the concert with the title track off of her debut. As you can see, she was moving the crowd.

A little later Teedra sang her hit "Be Your Girl".

Teedra then segued into a little remix version of "Be Your Girl". She sang it to the beat of Mtume's "Juicy" and even blessed us with a little of the original at the end.

In this next video, Teedra sung "Take Me" with her backup singer J. Black (or it may be Jay Black) taking on Raphael Saadiq's duet duties. OK, I have to pause for the cause and talk about said backup singer right here. Ladies, this brotha was PHOINE. He was handsome, tall, rocking the long locs, and he could sing. Yeah, dude was nice. I gave him props when I was rolling out of the venue and he was real cool, too. Check out Ms. Moses and Mr. Black doing their thing.

Teedra came out for an encore and she dropped "Backstroke" on us. Love. This. Song.

Teedra ended the show with a rendition of "Yearning For Your Love" by The Gap Band. I liked her take on the classic.

Even though her set was relatively short and she didn't sing my jams "Caution" and "Rescue Me", I thoroughly enjoyed the show. We didn't get to hear any new material off of The Young Lioness, but hopefully that means that Teedra will make her way back to DC when that CD drops this summer. I will surely be there.
After the show, Teedra came out to meet and greet folks. She signed autographs, took pictures, shook hands, and kissed babies. In my brief interaction with her, she was really genuine and nice. She was rocking some lovely ice, but she wasn't all divalicious with tons of makeup on under pounds of weave (that long, lovely mane is all hers). I love meeting people with so much talent who aren't stuck on themselves and are just real with theirs. Teedra Moses is definitely the real deal.
