I was just sitting at my desk eating lunch and listening to the AOL Radio 1 Hit Wonder station and almost choked on my sandwich when a serious blast from my past came on: "C'mon Ride This Train" by the Quad City DJ's.
Lord. Have. Mercy.
Y'all know I was Bankhead Bouncing and choo-chooing in my chair, right? (Discreetly, of course. What y'all take me for?) Oh my God this song took me smack dab back to 1996. I'm trying to tell you, this was me and my girl's jam back in the day. Yes, with our 20-something Georgetown-educated selves. We got down with the get down where bass music was concerned. You see I grew up in South Florida, my BFF Susan was from Detroit, and our girl Nia was from Atlanta--all bastions of bass music. So don't let the degrees fool you, we could dip it, pop it, twerk it, and stop it with the best of 'em.
At the time we all lived in the same overpriced apartment complex after graduation (Car Barn Mob...bwah ha ha...inside joke) and my car was the mode of transportation to many a party and nightclub (Blossom's, Spy Club, Republic Gardens, The Ritz, DC Live). I can see us now rolling with the windows down and the heat on blast because it was so cold outside during Howard's Homecoming. But, you see, we had to roll through, be cute, and holla at the honey dips (the male population of DC got so much finer during HU's Homecoming), and you couldn't do that with the windows up. Duh!
Anyway, this was one of those songs that just hooked us (and many others seeing as the single went platinum) and got us to moving. We'd put our names in the song ("Susan, Nia, and Kim wanna ride this train") and since we were out there working and getting a little pocket change we all "graduated from Boone's up to Alize." (Yes, I know all of the words. WHAT?!) Man, those were the days.
And I'll let y'all in on a secret...I even have the Quad City DJ's CD at home. Right alongside the 69 Boyz, 95 South, Dis 'N Dat, and 2 Live Crew. Matter of fact, I'm gonna have to break out some of these CD's when I get home, and pop it like it was 1996.Labels: Takin' It Back Thursday
From Boone's to Alize..LOL! 1996 was THE year chile, the year!
Even white America couldn't get with Vivi huh? Bless her heart.
